Yesterday as soon as I came into the barn for some dinner, the boss came and led me into the inside arena. I thought I was supposed to give her another lesson. So as soon as she approached me with the grain, I snatched a bit of the treat and tore off running wildly. But then she left and I didn’t know what was happening. I called out – and Magic answered! Again and again! Just like I used to call to Hoover when I couldn’t see him – and Magic answered! The boss brought Magic into the arena to be with me.

It turns out that the goal was to trim my hooves. I don’t like that! When the boss came back with a strange man with tools and tried to catch me again, I ran off. Magic came with me, standing between me and the boss. Finally, I felt calmer – Magic was so calm – and I let the man trim my hooves (okay, it is true that I was gorging on grain the whole time). So I had a great snack and my feet feel great.

But the best thing was Magic. He lives in Hoover’s stall next to mine now, and we spend a lot of time together in the fields. Today was the first time since Hoover died that I was sure I had a real friend I could count on. I called and Magic answered and joined me. I was afraid and Magic reassured me. Hoover would be happy. Today is the first day that I know I will be okay.
