WHY NOW?
“I feel the need: the need for speed” ~Tom Cruise in Top Gun
BECAUSE WE HAVE A NEED FOR SPEED.
Equamore Sanctuary remains one of the few Oregon refuges with the facilities, training, and willingness to help unwanted and difficult horses. But money has been tight this summer, and we’re fast running out of room and options. Like the rest of you, Equamore has weekly, monthly, yearly bills to pay; yet requests for help increase as the public becomes more aware of our success and as government funding for animals continues to be cut. In point of fact, non-profit charities like Equamore have taken on the burdens of animal stewardship that government agencies once rightly carried. At this time, Equamore Sanctuary has reached full capacity. Sadly, we may not be able to help more of the many horses who live desperate lives or the desperate people who want to keep their horses at home instead of in rescues. That’s why we continue to ask for help from people like you, our main source of income.
Good fences make good neighbors of horses who believe that every open space must be walked through. Whatever breaks or wears out on a horse facility must be repaired or replaced as soon as possible so that we remain good neighbors. Substantial gifts from individuals have made Equamore safe and secure. With your additional contributions, we can maintain that safety and security for our horses and for the people who live near us.
YOU CAN SPEED up planned maintenance and facility improvements by augmenting grant monies awarded by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) to construct a separate feed barn so that hay is no longer stored above the stalls in the main Equamore horse barn. That task has now been accomplished, and we are using remaining grant monies and contributions from anonymous donors to replace old fencing and build new shelters to meet the public’s growing need for large animal rescue facilities.
YOU CAN SPEED progress in meeting financial milestones by making a one-time contribution to our facilities fund: We made our first milestone of $50,000 on May 1st of 2013. But a second milestone of $75,000 is due on May 1st of 2014. Once we meet that milestone, Equamore Foundation will have proven that it is here to stay. (Of course, we knew that already!) Once proven economically viable, a non-profit is more likely to succeed in the highly competitive grant market for the capital and program improvements that will meet our long-term goals.
YOU CAN SPEED us toward those worthy goals by becoming One in a Thousand, an Equamore Friend, by the end of 2013. During the sixteen months since the opening of the Equamore Sanctuary in May of last year, the Foundation has accepted 18 new horses because their situations were dire. Three of these horses died at the Sanctuary (Shane after six weeks; Lady after one week; and Sapphire after only a single day) simply because they came to us too late to reverse the damage they had suffered from severe neglect and starvation. The horses of Equamore, as well as horses waiting for rescue, need your help. And they need it now! Please pull out your credit card and commit to providing just one bale of hay per month during 2014. Or make it a family project this season of renewal and hope to join or create a horse rescue team for your favorite Equamore horse.
YOU CAN SPEED your donations to us so we can fill the newly constructed feed barn by New Year’s Day simply by logging on to our web site at www.equamore.org and choosing one of the donation options listed there. Or you can create a rescue team for Morey, who was born on site to his newly rescued mother. Like General U. C. Davis, Morey has lived his entire life as an Equamore horse. He needs your help to provide funding for his daily handling, daily stall cleaning, twice daily feeding, periodic hoof trimming, and occasional medical care.
