PLEASE FENCE US IN
Like most equine rescues, Equamore Sanctuary has room for more horses but lacks the funding to care for their every-day needs. Simply put, our present donors have built the fences, prepped the fields, and put up new shelters in anticipation of growing numbers of horses who fit the definition of “unwanted.” What we lack is a broad, public commitment to become part of the solution. According to the Unwanted Horse Coalition, an annual contribution from every horse owner of just $50 to a local horse rescue would eliminate the conditions that lead to unfencing and abandonment of an estimated 100,000 horses annually in the United States.
Unlike Cole Porter, horses love being fenced in. If they had written his famous lyrics, the song would have been much different. Equamore Foundation’s mission is to make these rewritten words a reality for the horses who need our new Sanctuary fences in 2014.
The Unwanted Horse’s Version
Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above
Please fence me in.
Let me graze in the wide-open pastures that I love
Please fence me in.
Let me be by my mates in the evening breeze
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees.
Don’t ask many favors but will ask you please
Do fence me in.
Don’t turn me loose: can’t skedaddle under saddle
And can’t show to win the prize.
An old cayuse, I can’t wander over yonder
For I’m too weak to survive.
In the fields where I know that the herd defenses
Tell me more than just my single senses,
And I need safe harbor from life’s consequences,
Please fence me in
Donate, please, to fence me in.
