When she was about 10 years old, Ella lived on a wooded hill with lots of low handing branches. While living there, she poked her left eye and the injury was never treated. Ella is completely blind in that eye and partially blind in the other because of a cataract. She had a gelding foal as company at that time, but the foal was sold and Ellla was moved to another property. There she became a companion for Lady Bird whose 27-year-old mother had passed.
That property was sold to a relative with the agreement that the horses would be cared for and live out the remainder of their lives on the property. They both lived at the property together for about six years until one day, two geldings were moved close to the mares and in the excitement Ella sustained a very serious leg injury that required a veterinarian’s care. During the visit, the vet discovered that Ella’s eyesight was failing, but despite that she could still live a good life if her leg healed.
Ella was receiving the care needed for recovery and the leg was healing. Then the caregivers tried to move both Ella and Lady Bird to a different location. While trying to load Ella, she fell, splitting open her lip. She also reinjured the left leg and cut her right front leg as well. Her companion, Lady Bird, was taken away to the new location and Ella was put back in the paddock. Very upset and spooked, she jumped into a railing several times, leaving cuts on her face. Lady Bird was absolutely losing it as they took her away from Ella. The owners of the property entertained euthanasia as the final solution to Ella’s dilemma.
A concerned resident on the property called Equamore seeking sanctuary for Ella. Not only was Ella accepted into the Foundation, but her lost companion, Lady Bird, was also retrieved from the property to where she had been moved, and they will never be separated “until death do them part.”
