Mikey

  • Thoroughbred Gelding – Born 2012
  • Entry Date: 2/14/26
  • Retired by Owner

Originally born in Kentucky, Mikey relocated to Northern California where he had a successful racing career at Golden Gate Fields near Berkley, CA and he also raced at Emerald Downs near Alburn, WA. It is unknown how many races he ran in, but he won fourteen of those races over a period of nine years.

Mikey (aka “Drink Til You Drop”) had changed owners twenty times and was purchased by two of his owners twice.

It is remarkable that Mikey remained sound after nearly a decade of racing. After his racing career, Mikey transitions into becoming a skilled trail horse. In February of 2026, a random pasture accident sent him into early retirement at the age of fourteen. His owner at the time of the accident retired Mikey at the Sanctuary – committing to his lifetime of care.

He is exceptionally kind, cooperative, and easy to be around. Although Mikey has developed a “stable vice” that is not going to change. He is a “cribber.”

Cribbing is a coping mechanism for stress. It is common, addictive, and abnormal repetitive behavior (stereotypic) where a horse grabs a solid object (like a fence or stall edge) with its top teeth, arches its neck, and sucks in air, making a grunting sound. It is a learned behavior often seen in stressful environments such as the racetracks. As the horse bites down on the chosen object and inhales, endorphins are released that can give the animal a “high”. That is why it can be very difficult for the horse that has started cribbing to stop – they become addicted.
