A Long Painful Journey
Mister was only two months old in May 2000 when several horses from his herd (including his mother) were rounded up by the Bureau of Land Management. Mister was held at BLM facilities until he was two years old when he was adopted by a family at a BLM auction in Reno. The family paid $800 for the two-year-old strawberry roan Mustang with big feet and a heart of gold.
From what we understand, Mister received professional training and was ridden by a young girl. When the girl became a teenager, she lost interest in her horse. Mister was given to a neighbor, passed on to another neighbor, on to a working ranch, and finally ended up in a feedlot in Elko, Nevada. Mister, like other horses at the feedlot, was skinny and dirty. The horses waited to be loaded on a large trailer bound for a slaughterhouse in Mexico.
About an hour before the trailer was scheduled to be loaded and leave the feedlot the volunteers from a horse rescue spotted Mister. The rescue organization was able to gain ownership with donations from numerous generous people who helped with Mister’s journey to Oregon. From the feedlot he was transported to the home of a foster family. The family provided food, comfort, and support. When Mister was ready to travel, a donor from California paid to have him transported to Roseburg. After a brief time, he was adopted by his current owner, Linda Cannon, who had transported him to Equamore Sanctuary where she boards him and has committed to his lifetime of care.
The events that transpired after Mister left his original home until arriving at the feedlot can only be left to the imagination. The abuse he suffered was evidenced by his physical condition, reactive behavior, and emotional withdrawal.
