Treat and his brother, Trick, were born in Baker City, Oregon. They were sired by a Morgan named Fernando, and they all three were transported to a property on Wagner Creek Road in Talent, Oregon, about ten years ago.
The horses were ridden on camping and backpacking trips for at least a few summers, but as their owners got older, they stopped riding, and the horses were left to wander their pasture.
About six years ago, when the husband died, the wife sent the horses back to Montana to her son. He wasn’t particularly good with the horses, so Fernando and Treat were sent back to the Wagner Creek property. Trick passed away in Montana. By this time, Treat had developed some bad habits and had not had much attention.
One of the neighbors became very fond of the horses, spent time with them, and groomed them as often as she could.
When the owner could no longer care for the property, both horses were given away. Fernando was moved to Applegate, Oregon, and Treat was given to a woman who wanted him as her trail-riding horse. She felt he needed more training and sent him to a facility that worked with Treat for six months before they decided that he was lame and not suited for riding. It was at this point that she decided she no longer wanted him and was considering euthanasia.
The neighbor who used to groom Treat and Fernando grew increasingly concerned about Treat’s bleak future. She arranged to have Treat, now 14 years old, retired to the Equamore Sanctuary and committed to sponsoring him for the remainder of his life. He arrived at the Sanctuary this year in late March and graces the front pasture with Applejack, Poquito, and Sampson.
