Wishes and Shane have just arrived at Equamore Sanctuary — and for the first time in a long while, they’ll be guaranteed a safe, warm winter ahead.
These two lovely horses were rescued from a situation that is, sadly, not uncommon: good intentions that can, unfortunately, lead to neglect. Wishes and Shane were owned by people who didn’t realize the specialized care they need. Shane is missing a lot of teeth, and while he was in a pasture, he wasn’t receiving the nutrients he needed because he couldn’t process his food. Wishes, on the other hand, was overweight (which is a problem for horses as it can create a metabolic imbalance that can cause inflammation inside the hoof); she is almost completely blind and was having trouble navigating the pasture she was in.
Both horses were brought to Equamore after concerned citizens noticed how skinny Shane was becoming. Shane now receives a special diet that will help him get back to a healthy weight — as you can see in this photo, he is still incredibly thin. Yet he has a very healthy appetite and is making up for lost time — he was so intent on his dinner that he wouldn’t look up for his photo op.
Wishes, who lives in the stall right next door to Shane, is a sweetheart; she is friendly and very trusting, especially for a horse who can’t see what’s going on around her. She’s curious and will poke her head out of her stall when she hears voices. She loves attention and will snuggle right up to visitors who come up to pet her.
Equamore now has forty-seven horses who will receive lifetime care. Many of the sanctuary’s horses have special needs that require extra attention, special diets, and veterinary care. If you’d like to help support the Sanctuary’s work, click here to learn more and to donate.
