Gentle Giant

  • Black Bay Dutch Warm Blood/Thoroughbred Gelding
  • Entry Date – 8/23/05 at age 10
  • Type of rescue – Retired
  • Reason – Slight limitation in the movement of his left shoulder
  • Special needs – Some special feeds
  • Passing — 8/23/13

After an injury that left Zulu with a slight limitation in the movement of his left shoulder, he was brought to the Foundation and put into retirement with a lifetime sponsorship by his owner along with his stable mate, Banner, who was also being retired. Banner has since died of colic.
Standing 17.1 hands with a massive body, Zulu is quite impressive to look at and even more impressive to ride. The limitation in his shoulder is very slight, and not even noticeable most of the time. Because it is also not painful, Zulu is used occasionally in a dressage or jumping lesson and has a very generous work ethic. He is a pleasure to work with and to be around, deserving of his title “Gentle Giant.”

Update:   After a long fight with multiple episodes of colic, and numerous efforts to provide relief, Zulu finally lost his battle. On Friday, August 23, we made the decision along with our vet to put Zulu to rest.   Zulu had been an Equamore horse for exactly 8 years, and was well loved for his kind nature. We will miss him, as will his best friend Joe.
