We have reported over the years about a situation in Southern Oregon where numerous animals, including horses, were kept in horrific conditions on a property in Central Point. The rescue began in February of 2013. We removed the last of the surviving horses in 2018.

Six horses in total were surrendered to the Sanctuary: Royal Crown and Dusty arrived in February 2013; Arlo and Frida in June 2016; and Tank and Maria in June 2018. Royal Crown, Arlo, and Frida have since passed away.

Jackson County deputies pushed to get the most desperate horses removed from the property and did not go through the more difficult and longer legal process of seizure and arrest. It was a devil’s choice, for sure, with consequences borne by the horses, donkeys, and sheep left behind.

Shortly after Royal Crown, emaciated from lack of food, was surrendered to Equamore, the owner also surrendered Dusty, a Belgian Cross, who was only slightly underweight. Dusty was in a very small, hot-wired pen in front of a mobile home with two other horses. Clearly the alpha, or dominant horse of the three, Dusty was getting most of the little bit of food they were being fed.

The owner just did not like Dusty and said he was dangerous and mean. Most likely, the feeling was mutual. Dusty has never shown any dangerous or mean behavior since his rescue.

Dusty has been fully sponsored since he has been at the Sanctuary by the owner of the mustang named Mister stalled next to Dusty.
