Tucker is a gorgeous, adorable palomino Quarter Horse. He first came to us via a deputy reporting an injured lost foal running down a highway in the Ashland foothills late one night in September of 2016. Volunteers responded immediately and Tucker was transported to the Sanctuary.
Tucker was born on a property in Southeastern Oregon. He was attacked by a large cat when he was just five-months old and was transported to a property near Ashland where he could receive the vet care that he needed. His mother was left behind. His injuries were extensive and several of the lacerations were sutured. He was also being treated with antibiotics. This was all very traumatic for the baby foal. He was all alone in the mountains and that September night, he had escaped from his enclosure, most likely looking for his mother.
His owners claimed him a few days after his rescue, but we worried for this little fellow. An Equamore supporter arranged for his returned to us in early November and he is here this time to stay! The very morning that the owners were going to transport him back to the Sanctuary, Tucker was nowhere to be found. He had escaped his enclosure for a second time. Thankfully he was found unharmed.
Tucker was gelded in April of 2017 – he was beginning to show stallion behavior which made it difficult to place him with other horses. Still too small to be in the gelding herd, we struggled to find a place for Tucker. As often happens at the Sanctuary, unexpected events cause things to work out for the better. Grace, an elderly nearly blind mare, took to him as they have adjoining stalls in the big barn. Grace’s vision is too poor for her to be in the mare field and needed a guide horse since her friend Kizzy died. Tucker needed a job and another horse he could safely and freely graze with. And so, the most unlikely of couples developed. Tucker and Grace spend their days together in the small field next to the mare field along with the gentle Chance and Bojingles. Tucker guides Grace around the field giving Grace much needed exercise and Grace teaches Tucker how to interact with another horse. Incredibly sweet.
