Equamore Sanctuary’s Christmas at the Barn

This afternoon, Equamore Sanctuary hosted a Christmas at the Barn party with stable tours, stories about the horses, and hot chocolate, cider, and other goodies, creating a wonderful opportunity for the community to learn more about Equamore. It was a beautiful, sunny (if chilly) afternoon, and all visitors arriving at the barn were first greeted by Magic, below. After saying hello to Magic, visitors walked through the barn, where Equamore board members, staff, and volunteers were on hand to introduce…

Two new horses arrive at Equamore Sanctuary

Wishes and Shane have just arrived at Equamore Sanctuary — and for the first time in a long while, they’ll be guaranteed a safe, warm winter ahead. These two lovely horses were rescued from a situation that is, sadly, not uncommon: good intentions that can, unfortunately, lead to neglect. Wishes and Shane were owned by people who didn’t realize the specialized care they need. Shane is missing a lot of teeth, and while he was in a pasture, he wasn’t…

Equamore featured in Ashland Daily Tidings

The Ashland Daily Tidings published a feature today about animal rescue and people in the community who support rescue groups and sanctuaries in many different ways. Along with the Tidings feature is a video featuring members of the community who rescue animals — including a few voices from Equamore. Executive director Linda Davis talks about having been around horses all her life and having seen a lot of neglect, abuse, and cruelty — and, all too often, she’s found that horses have nowhere to…

All the Little Horses – Rescued Miniatures to be Auctioned December 8

In his National Book Award winning novel All the Pretty Horses author Cormac McCarthy includes vivid and moving descriptions, such as this:“he was among the horses running and in the dream he himself could run with the horses and they coursed the young mares and fillies over the plain where their rich bay and their rich chestnut colors shone in the sun and the young colts ran with their dams and trampled down the flowers in a haze of pollen…

Happy Anniversary to Sara

It was a treat to be at Equamore last week for this very special event: the one-year anniversary of Sara and her “person,” Equamore board vice-president Ruth Kennedy. Being a “person” to Sara means walking, grooming, and visiting her — as well as proffering treats (Sara and Ruth share an apple at the end of nearly every day). After Sara was rescued from severe neglect by Equamore back in 2008, she was placed twice in adopted homes and twice returned. In February of 2010, the sanctuary became her…

Having received non-profit status in 1996, it is one of the longest running horse rescue organization in the United States today. We provide sanctuary for equines, as well as assistance to horse owners, education and outreach to help reduce the need for sanctuary. A Sad Necessity

Yesterday, we had to make one of the hardest decisions horse rescuers have to make when caring for horses suffering from severe neglect. After consultation with our veterinarian when new radiographs revealed that Hoover’s hooves were continuing to deteriorate, we made the decision to allow the lovely chestnut thoroughbred to go to his final rest.   Even though alert and apparently healthy, Hoover spent much of his time lying down. When he walked, he was forced to use his hind legs…
