Purchased off the racetrack, Johnny Boy was turned out into a field and denied food and hoof care for an estimated three months. His coat clung to what was left of his scant musculature and gaunt frame. He was so underweight that his withers, the highest point of a horse’s skeletal structure, sunk below the height of his hips. His front feet were shod in mismatched shoes, and his hind hooves had abscessed and were so rotted out with thrush that the hoof trimmer had to peel off layers of necrotic and diseased tissue before the healing process could begin.
Despite his sorrowfully disturbing appearance, Johnny’s most striking quality was his gentle, cooperative, and inquisitive nature. From the very beginning, he was so congenial that we wondered if his nature was caused by his weakness from malnutrition. We were told that he was a stallion, but no testicles were visible, nor could he drop his penis from the sheath to urinate. His sheath would simply fill with urine and then run out onto the ground.
After three months of appropriate feeding, dietary supplements, medical attention, and hoof care, Johnny’s recovery is no less than an inspiration. His current appearance, as you can see here in his photo, is a far cry from that of the blatantly neglected horse that came to the Foundation after being seized by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. What has not changed is his friendly, amiable disposition.
Indeed a stallion, Johnny was gelded and is now strong enough to be turned out and run with the other horses during the day. Without an “aggressive bone in his body,” Johnny is eager to make friends. His inquisitive approach with the other horses is heartwarmingly subtle and affectionate. He is currently living next to his new best friend and constant companion, Silver Belle, since her longtime companion, Bobby Socks, passed away in July of 2022.
