Brave Little Spud

Spud was taken to the Klamath Large Animal Shelter in mid-February along with another donkey and two horses seized by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department from a ranch on the outskirts of Lakeview, OR. Spud was once a wild burro rounded up by BLM and adopted out to a rancher to be used as a predator deterrent guarding livestock. Now 25 years-of-age, he bears the scars (some quite severe) of the extremely difficult existence he was born into and the exploitation he suffered.

Several other animals on the ranch (mostly cattle) had succumbed to winter conditions and/or depredation. Spud was underweight, had overgrown and disfigured hooves, and was losing hair coat in patches, most likely from stress.

When the volunteers at the animal shelter realized that Spud’s companion (Clover) was physically beyond rehabilitation and was scheduled for euthanasia, they reached out to the Equamore Foundation in search of a safe home for Spud. The Foundation agreed to take him in, and he was transported to the Sanctuary on April 22nd.

Upon his arrival, Spud’s new caretakers greeted him with a plan to continue the long process of rehabilitation begun at the Klamath Falls shelter, where his disfigured hooves were carefully trimmed and he was introduced to a specialized diet to help him regain weight and strength. The Sanctuary now provides Spud with a peaceful environment where he can recover from the traumas of his past life.

Spud is gradually adapting to his new surroundings and the gentle care he receives. His hair coat is beginning to grow back, and his overall health is improving. The scars he bares are reminders of his resilience, and his journey is an inspiration to all who learn of his story.

Spud’s transformation is not just physical but emotional as well. The love and dedication of the Sanctuary staff will help him find trust and comfort in his new home. He has found companionship and solace with the donkey (Holly) who had endured similar hardships.

Today, Spud roams the pastures of the Sanctuary, free from the ordeals that once defined his existence. His story serves as a testament to the power of compassion and the profound impact of a second chance at life.
