Tango, an exuberant dark bay Arabian gelding, has a conformation defect in his front right leg known as “back at the knee.”  As can be seen in the photo, Tango does not let this defect get him down or even keep him on the ground. Tango has even devised an ingenious and unique way of climbing through the chains that separate the stall runs from the big turnout field to burgle feed from other horses’ stalls. Unfortunately, the weight of a rider does cause him to trip and stumble frequently and one day he fell with his owner in the saddle. For the sake of his health, safety, and the safety of his rider, Tango was retired in 2009 around the age of ten.

Tango was first boarded on the property in early 2007. At the end of 2009 his family moved to California and took Tango with them. Within three months they moved back to Ashland, boarding Tango at the Sanctuary once again. When the family moved away a second time, they decided not to move Tango, but continued paying his boarding fees, leaving him in retirement at the Sanctuary. Ten years later, the regular monthly support for Tango’s care stopped coming in. Fortunately for Tango, he was abandoned at Equamore Sanctuary and the Foundation’s community of supporters are providing for his care now. Abandonment by their owners – turned loose on open range land, left in a field, or abandoned at a boarding stable – is an all-too-common occurrence.

Tango has a mare friend he has formed a special bond with, and they are virtually inseparable. Serendipitously, Tango’s friend happens to be named Dancer. Tango and Dancer spend their days together, joined at the hip, in the “Couple’s Field” and housed, stall to stall, in the “Couple’s Barn” at night. This field and barn were so named because of the five tightly bonded couples who live in the barn at night and are turned out together in the field during the day.
