Vincent

Freed From the End of His Rope

  • Bay Arabian Gelding (arrived as a stallion)
  • Entry Date – August 31, 2022 at Age 10
  • Type of Rescue – Seizure by Jackson County Sheriff’s Dept.
  • Reason – Abandonment & Neglect
  • Special Needs – None

We received a call from a Community Service Officer with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department the afternoon of August 31st. They were in the middle of an illegal pot grow bust and an Arabian stallion was on the property, alone, and tied to a disk (tractor implement) with a rope halter and a long tether. His water source was the drainage under his feet from the irrigation water for the pot grows. There was no feed in sight. The people who were being arrested said that the owner had abandoned him some time ago and they had been “taking care of him.”

Scott LeQuieu, the farm manager at Sanctuary One, volunteered to transport the horse to Equamore. On arrival, the horse was very agitated and calling out frantically to the other horses as the trailer made its way down the driveway to the main barn. His crying out was answered by numerous resident horses.

He arrived in good physical condition but hysterical. The hysteria was most likely because he was a stallion and also because he had been kept in isolation from other horses for an unknown period of time. Once in his stall and provided an abundant ration of hay, he ate frantically. Almost immediately, he threw himself down into the straw bedding for a roll.

He has been given the name Vincent (nickname Vinny). He was gelded on September 8th and the veterinarian who performed the operation guessed his age to be about nine or ten. He has formed a very tight bond with Chaps, who has lived at the Sanctuary for 17 years and never formed an obvious bond with any of the other horses. They are stalled side-by-side in the main barn and spend their time in daily turnout in the “couples’ field” with all the other inseparable “couples.”
