Freed From the End of His Rope

  • Bay Arabian Gelding (arrived as a stallion)
  • Entry Date – August 31, 2022 at Age 10
  • Type of Rescue – Seizure by Jackson County Sheriff’s Dept.
  • Reason – Abandonment & Neglect
  • Special Needs – None

On the afternoon of August 31, 2022, we received a call from a Community Service Officer with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Officers were conducting an illegal marijuana grow bust when they found a lone Arabian stallion on the property, tied to a tractor disk with a rope halter and long tether. His only water was drainage from the irrigation used for the marijuana plants, and there was no feed in sight. Those being arrested said the horse had been abandoned by his owner some time earlier and that they had been “taking care of him.”

The farm manager at Sanctuary One volunteered to bring the horse to the Equamore Sanctuary. When the trailer arrived and headed down the driveway toward the main barn, the horse was extremely agitated, hysterically calling to the other horses. His cries were answered by numerous resident horses.

Although he arrived in good physical condition, he was extremely distressed. This was likely because he was still a stallion and had been isolated from other horses for an unknown length of time. Once settled in his stall with plenty of hay, he ate frantically, then almost immediately dropped into the straw bedding to roll.

He was named Vincent, or Vinny for short. A few weeks after arriving, Vinny was gelded, and the veterinarian estimated he was about nine or ten years old.

Now stabled in the main barn and turned out daily to graze and socialize, Vinny will never be alone, neglected, or abandoned again.
