Back in the Big Field!

Magic and I are back in the large gelding field!      Spring grass is gone, so we get a vacation from the mares.    It was like a homecoming – seeing Finn, Echo Star and the others.   While we talk across the fence, it’s not the same as being together and able to touch noses and groom each other. Casper came right away to Magic – maybe he was just happy to see another grey horse!   I let him and…

Sara and Jewel Must Go

As you know, I am not fond of most mares.   Sara has driven me to distraction since Hoover and I arrived at the Sanctuary.  Beautiful, but an obnoxious little princess.    Now a new mare, Jewel, is just as bad.  Aside from being so possessive of Kizzy, she chases the lovely Bo.   Bo has some problems with her feet, like Magic and Hoover.   She also is friendly to all the other horses – even the sometimes testy little Sassy seems to…

Wishes and Eddie – Home at Last

Eddie and Wishes are finally in their custom made field.   While both are blind, they both seem to see some light.  This field is flat, with sound cues – driveways, the creek, etc. – on all four sides, along with bells along the fence line.   Solar lights also rim the perimeter in the hopes that if they do see light, they will see these at night or see the sun shimmer on them in the daytime.  So far these…

What’s Wrong With These Pictures?

What’s Wrong With These Pictures? These pictures are  wrong!    I know we look awesome.   Magic and I are behaving like gentlemen in the cross ties.    Our halters suit us.    But I’ll tell you what’s wrong here – IT IS DINNER TIME!    We were waiting at the gate to come in for dinner.   We are always first – the rest of our herd knows who is in charge here.   But instead of leading me to my stall where my hay was waiting,…

Ah, Magic!

Magic and I have become best of friends these last months.    Our stalls are next to each other—he has Hoover’s old stall with the great turnout.  We graze together; we roll in the mud together; when the fields are too wet, we hang out in the arena together; and we go to the cross ties together to have our feet cleaned.   While he teases me a bit about my crush on Bo, he understands my love of grey horses with…

Celebrate National Horse Protection Day!

Friday, March 1, is National Horse Protection Day — a holiday created to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect, homelessness, and slaughter  of horses in America and to promote public education about how people and communities can help. To celebrate this year’s National Horse Protection Day, join Equamore staff and volunteers at the Ashland Art Center, which will host a special exhibit of paintings by Ashland artist and Equamore volunteer Dana Feagin. The First Friday exhibit will feature five of Dana’s horse…

Update on Bryant

January 28, 2013 Bryant has made so much progress since he got his special shoes.  Other than of course being more comfortable and energetic, Bryant is starting to interact with other horses.  He joined in Buckley’s favorite game of nip and scream, and raced around the arena in a game of chase with Pete, Mowen and Josey.  Perhaps Bryant has stayed to himself all this time because he didn’t feel sound enough for horse play with the guys.  Perhaps he…

I Like Bo

January 23, 2013 A young gelding that I admired but had not seen for a while appeared recently in the field where Magic and I now graze.  Raffie!  He has changed.  Last time I saw him he was so skinny and his hair was so odd.  Now he is big and healthy looking, and I can even tell that he is an Arab.  His tail is still broken, but this summer we will help him with the flies. The reason…

Meet Equamore’s horses: Hazel

Hazel was first rescued from an elderly woman in Williams, Oregon, and brought to a new home in Grants Pass. Unfortunately, while her new owners’ intentions were good, they knew nothing of horse care, and they left Hazel alone to graze in a vineyard fenced with barbed wire, where the resident dog chased her and pulled her tail. When her rescuers noticed that she growing thinner and virtually tailless while her feet were growing longer and longer, they called the…

Meet Equamore’s horses: Raffie

Raffie arrived at the Equamore sanctuary in September of 2012 after Jackson County investigated a report of two neglected horses. A deputy called Equamore to take in both horses, but at the last minute, the owners refused to surrender the other, younger horse, allowing only Raffie to be taken to the sanctuary. The other horse had to be left behind, alone in the field. Raffie was extremely thin and, despite the fall season, had not shed his thick coat from…
