Cappri is the blue roan and Sophie is the red roan. They have been field bred broodmares all of their lives with minimal care and handling, barely halter trained, and must be sedated to have their hooves trimmed.

These two sisters were purchased in foal from a breeder in Idaho by a man who had plans to send them to his property in Hawaii. In Hawaii the foals would be of greater value than they are here in Oregon. His timing was not good as it was around the time that Covid-19 had begun to disrupt many things like shipping schedules for boats. The mares were unable to go to Hawaii before the foals were born.

After separating the mares from their foals, Cappri and Sophie were board at Hawk Haven Equestrian Center. Even in extremely poor physical condition, the owner continued trying to make arrangements to breed them again and finally ship the mares to Hawaii, but eventually gave up on that idea. He stopped paying the mare’s boarding fees and threatened to take them to the Warm Springs Indian Reservation and turn them loose to fend for themselves. Weighing the horrors of that option, Hawk Haven agreed to keep the mares and find them a permanent home. Equamore Sanctuary will be that permanent home for the remainder of their lives and they will never be separated as long as they live as they are very closely bonded.
