Nothing much is known of Santana’s past. He was seized by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in a criminal neglect case with his mother, three other mares, and a gelding.
We’ve been told that he was kept in a ridiculously small paddock alone. His feet were grossly overgrown when he arrived at the Sanctuary, and he was well over a healthy body weight. He was very fearful, anxious. and even trembled when approached by the veterinarian or farrier.
All that has changed. He has a best friend in Frida and spends his nights in a stall next to her and turned out in a large field during the day for exercise with Frida, Chaps, and Star. He is much easier to handle and his front feet can be trimmed without incident. Approaching his hind feet is another story and a work in progress.
