Nothing much is known of Zenchu’s past except that she is Santana’s mother. She was seized by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in a criminal neglect case with five other horses on January 2, 2023.
When she arrived at the Sanctuary she was very overweight, her mane and tail were tangled and matted, her hoof care had been seriously neglected, and she was covered with mud balls that had been there a very long time. She was extremely nervous and very difficult to catch.
For the first nine months after her arrival, she occupied the field and shelters next to the main barn with the three mares and one gelding she was rescued with. In October of 2023 she moved into the main barn where she has her very own stall. She eagerly comes in from her daily turnout to her stall which she clearly enjoys. She allows her front feet to be regularly trimmed, but handling her hind feet is still a work in progress.
