Santasia

A Second Chance for Health & Happiness

  • Bay Peruvian Paso Mare
  • Entry Date – January 2, 2023, at Age 16
  • Type of Rescue – Seizure by Jackson County Sheriff’s Dept.
  • Reason – Chronic Neglect
  • Special Needs – Hoof Care

Santasia arrived with Santana, Santana’s mother, the gelding Midnight, and three other mares – Eclipse, Zenchu, and Latte.

Nothing much is known of this herd’s past. They were seized by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in a criminal neglect case on January 2, 2023.

When she arrived at the Sanctuary, her feet were grotesquely overgrown, and she was morbidly overweight. She was also very fearful, anxious, and difficult to catch and halter.

Now Santasia has her very own stall next to Santana and spends her days with him in a turned-out field for exercise with a few other horses including the other four she was rescued with. She is much easier to handle now, loves being groomed, her feet can be trimmed without incident, and she is at a normal body weight although her crest has fallen because of the obesity she once suffered from.
