Departed Friends

These horses have lived out their lives after rescue under the care of the Equamore Foundation. Many lived with us for years; a few only for days. They are all missed. Click on each photo to see their pages.

I Like Bo

January 23, 2013 A young gelding that I admired but had not seen for a while appeared recently in the field where Magic and I now graze.  Raffie!  He has changed.  Last time I saw him he was so skinny and his hair was so odd.  Now he is big and healthy looking, and I can even tell that he is an Arab.  His tail is still broken, but this summer we will help him with the flies. The reason…

Bet for the horses!

Betting for the Horses

1/12/13 My little person likes to gamble.  After I heard she had won money for the precious Sara, for the General (he is awesome) and for my good friend Magic, I sent her to the local casino to bet for me.  HA!  Of course I won – $800 to be exact.  Sweet!  How many baby carrots can $800 buy? Some of our horses here at the Sanctuary are Thoroughbreds who used to race.  From what I understand, they were expected…

Shane's Door and Harnes

Tribute to Shane

January 13, 2013 Late this evening, Shane passed away.   In the six weeks he was an Equamore horse, he gained a lot of weight with special feed, had his dental problems cared for, had a cozy stall next to his best friend Wishes, found the energy to trot around the arena with his head held high and was well loved by Equamore staff and volunteers.  Sadly, he developed colic and none of the vet’s treatments worked.  His still-weakened condition and…

Oh Good Grief!

Sometimes I worry about myself.  Magic and I have not been able to go to the fields lately.  I really don’t know whose feet are keeping us in.  The doors to our runs have been closed to keep one of us out of the mud.  This is sad – I love mud!  I also love standing in my run looking out to the fields, day dreaming and remembering Hoover.  We have been able to run around the indoor arena which…

Bo Arriving at Equamore

Reunion

December 30, 2012 Today, at last, Raffie’s friend Bojingles “Bo” arrived at the Sanctuary.  After more than three months alone in a pasture after Raffie was moved to the Sanctuary, Bo was turned over to Equamore.  As the truck and trailer approached the property where she has lived, her eyes followed the trailer, as if she remembered it as the one that would take her to Raffie. As she came out of the trailer at the Sanctuary and went into…

Meet Equamore’s horses: Hazel

Hazel was first rescued from an elderly woman in Williams, Oregon, and brought to a new home in Grants Pass. Unfortunately, while her new owners’ intentions were good, they knew nothing of horse care, and they left Hazel alone to graze in a vineyard fenced with barbed wire, where the resident dog chased her and pulled her tail. When her rescuers noticed that she growing thinner and virtually tailless while her feet were growing longer and longer, they called the…

Shoe Truck

Hoof Update

December 28, 2012 Three of our horses had shoes put on their front feet today.  Two of these horses, Shorty and Bryant, have been diagnosed with disease of their Navicular bones in both front feet.  Shorty has very small feet for his size which dramatically contributes to his disease and he also has very tender soles.  Bryant was fitted with special shoes with a rubber wedge made to lift his heels.  The difference was immediate and stunning.  After a few…

Thor's Horseshoes

Shoes

December 28, 2012 Yesterday, I was galloping in the arena with the guys and I ran right out of my boots!  I am Thor!  One boot just flew off, tearing the strap with it.  You should have seen it fly!  Ha!  Imagine my power!  The other came off but was trailing behind me because the strap did not break.  I just kept running!  I love that I can get them off, but like how good my feet feel when they…

Meet Equamore’s horses: Raffie

Raffie arrived at the Equamore sanctuary in September of 2012 after Jackson County investigated a report of two neglected horses. A deputy called Equamore to take in both horses, but at the last minute, the owners refused to surrender the other, younger horse, allowing only Raffie to be taken to the sanctuary. The other horse had to be left behind, alone in the field. Raffie was extremely thin and, despite the fall season, had not shed his thick coat from…
