Two new horses arrive at Equamore Sanctuary

Wishes and Shane have just arrived at Equamore Sanctuary — and for the first time in a long while, they’ll be guaranteed a safe, warm winter ahead. These two lovely horses were rescued from a situation that is, sadly, not uncommon: good intentions that can, unfortunately, lead to neglect. Wishes and Shane were owned by people who didn’t realize the specialized care they need. Shane is missing a lot of teeth, and while he was in a pasture, he wasn’t…

Anniversary

November 29, 2012 One year ago today Hoover and I came to the Sanctuary.  I normally don’t think much about dates and just live day to day.  Some days are great, some not so much.  But one year ago today will stay in my mind forever.  That was the day the people came for us and took us to a safe place with food and shelter and cared for Hoover and where no one treated me badly.  I didn’t know…

Mud

Mud

November 27, 2012 The cold and rainy season is here.  While I am still in the mare field with Magic, the field isn’t dry anymore.  We have mud!  Beautiful, slimy, slippery mud!  My morning roll is the best ever – I get mud all over my back, along my neck and through my spectacular (if I may say so) mane. Each morning now I look for the wonderful mud from my run, hoping it is still there and waiting to…

Equamore featured in Ashland Daily Tidings

The Ashland Daily Tidings published a feature today about animal rescue and people in the community who support rescue groups and sanctuaries in many different ways. Along with the Tidings feature is a video featuring members of the community who rescue animals — including a few voices from Equamore. Executive director Linda Davis talks about having been around horses all her life and having seen a lot of neglect, abuse, and cruelty — and, all too often, she’s found that horses have nowhere to…

All the Little Horses – Rescued Miniatures to be Auctioned December 8

In his National Book Award winning novel All the Pretty Horses author Cormac McCarthy includes vivid and moving descriptions, such as this:“he was among the horses running and in the dream he himself could run with the horses and they coursed the young mares and fillies over the plain where their rich bay and their rich chestnut colors shone in the sun and the young colts ran with their dams and trampled down the flowers in a haze of pollen…

Happy Anniversary to Sara

It was a treat to be at Equamore last week for this very special event: the one-year anniversary of Sara and her “person,” Equamore board vice-president Ruth Kennedy. Being a “person” to Sara means walking, grooming, and visiting her — as well as proffering treats (Sara and Ruth share an apple at the end of nearly every day). After Sara was rescued from severe neglect by Equamore back in 2008, she was placed twice in adopted homes and twice returned. In February of 2010, the sanctuary became her…

Life – a Haiku

November 13, 2012 Life – a Haiku Green grass, room to roam. Run swift, gallop, valley view. Freedom gives me life. Hoover, Magic, Finn. Friends, some here and some passed on. My herd gives me life. Sweet grain, honeycrisp. Food inspiration, comfort, calm. Eating gives me life. Boss and little one. Caring, touching, share a breath. Hah! Hah! Not a chance! I crack myself up sometimes!  Magic needed the laugh, too.  I may be in the dry old mare field,…

Thor, feeling blue

I am Blue

November 10, 2012 I am trying to keep a good attitude, Hoover.  Really I am. The truth is things are different for me lately.  I am limping and don’t know why.  I didn’t use to notice it as much.  The humans have put me in a different pasture where there is no green grass, with Magic, whose feet hurt, and Preston who also can’t have green grass.  I like these guys a lot (although Preston is very pushy about who…
